THE managing director of an East Lancashire farm where 100 chicks were bricked to death said she was ‘absolutely horrified’.

Police believe the birds died when a gang of five teenage boys forced their way into two pens at Knuzden Brook Poultry Farm in Haslingden Old Road on Tuesday night and hit them with bricks and rocks.

Debbie Lyons said: “It’s diabolical. Whoever has done this – they are mindless cowards.

"How can a chick defend itself?

“These children need to be found and stopped. I don’t understand the motivation behind it, except that it’s peer pressure and thinking they look big.

“I really hope that one of them in the gang really regrets doing this and comes forward.

“The thing is, one day it’s chicks, then it could be a cat, then it could escalate and we end up with a child being attacked in a playground.

“This is one of the most disgusting things I have ever seen.”

The gang of five youths, aged around 17 or 18, were spotted outside a chicken pen by farm manager Matthew Hyland, 25, when he pulled his van up in the yard at 8.30pm on Tuesday.

Matthew said: “My passenger ran after the lads, and I drove the van to the next road to see if I could stop them, but they got away.

“It’s awful. We work with these chickens every day, feeding them, making sure they’re all right.”

Matt said: “If the youths had got into our control room and damaged it, then the whole operation would have shut down and with no heating.

"All the chicks would have died within five or 10 minutes.

“It could have cost us hundreds of thousands of pounds.”

Nato Planes drops Bombs on Libyan Rebels

Nato has acknowledged its air strikes in "may have" resulted in the deaths of rebel forces on the ground in Libya yesterday - but will not apologise.
The military alliance did not know the rebels were using tanks, spokesman Rear Admiral Russell Harding said after the attack, which killed at least five people.
But a rebel commander earlier claimed Nato had been told the rebels were moving T55 and T72 heavy tanks from Benghazi to Brega.
General Abdul Fatah Younis said at a news conference in Benghazi that fighters and medics were among the dead after the bombing "carried out in error".
Saleh Faraj, a former soldier fighting with the rebels, said at least three rebel tanks were hit in the air strike.
"There was no fighting anywhere. (The warplanes) flew back and forth and then they struck our forces," said Faraj.
The incident came ater the rebels criticised Nato for failing to provide the assistance it requires.

German news group runs photos of Afghan Killings

SEATTLE: A photograph of a US soldier smiling as he posed with the bloodied and partially naked corpse of an Afghan civilian was among those published digitally Sunday by a German news organization, despite attempts by Army officials to keep them under wraps as part of a war crimes probe.

The photos published by Der Spiegel were among several seized by Army investigators looking into the deaths of three unarmed Afghans last year. Five soldiers based at Joint Base Lewis-McChord, south of Seattle, have been charged with murder and conspiracy in the case.

Officials involved in the courts-martial had issued a strict protective order, seeking to severely limit access to the photographs due to their sensitive nature. Some defense teams had been granted copies but were not allowed to disseminate them.

It was not immediately known how Der Spiegel obtained copies.

One of the published photographs shows a key figure in the investigation, Cpl. Jeremy Morlock, grinning as he lifts the head of a corpse by the hair. Der Spiegel identified the body as that of Gul Mudin, whom Morlock was charged with killing on Jan. 15, 2010, in Kandahar Province.

Another photo shows Pvt. 1st Class Andrew Holmes holding the head of the same corpse. His lawyer, Daniel Conway, said Sunday that Holmes was ordered ‘‘to be in the photo, so he got in the photo. That doesn’t make him a murderer.’’

The photo was taken while the platoon leader, Lt. Roman Ligsay, was present, Conway said. Ligsay has asserted his Fifth Amendment right against self-incrimination in refusing to testify in the legal proceedings against his troops.

Conway sought copies of the photographs so that he could present them to a ballistics expert, who he argued might be able to tell whether the victim had been struck by the weapon Holmes was carrying. His request was rejected.

‘‘I’m very disappointed that in an American judicial proceeding, I have to get potentially exculpatory evidence from a German newspaper,’’ Conway said.

A third photo depicts two apparently dead men propped against a small pillar. Der Spiegel said the photo was seized from a member of the platoon, but did not involve the deaths being investigated as war crimes. Soldiers have told investigators that such photos of dead bodies were passed around like trading cards on thumb drives and other digital storage devices.

‘‘Today Der Spiegel published photographs depicting actions repugnant to us as human beings and contrary to the standards and values of the United States Army,’’ the Army said in a statement released by Col. Thomas Collins. ‘‘We apologize for the distress these photos cause.’’

The killings at issue occurred during patrols in January, February and May 2010. After the first death, one member of the platoon, Spc. Adam Winfield, sent Facebook messages to his parents, telling them his colleagues had slaughtered one civilian, were planning to kill more and warned him to keep quiet about it.

His father notified a staff sergeant at Lewis-McChord, but no action was taken until May, when a witness in a drug investigation in the unit separately reported the deaths. Winfield is accused of participating in the final killing.

Morlock has given extensive statements claiming the murder plot was led by Staff Sgt. Calvin Gibbs, who maintains the killings were legitimate.

Morlock told investigators he and Holmes shot Mudin without cause; Holmes says that he fired when Morlock told him to, believing that Morlock had perceived a legitimate threat.

Morlock’s court martial was scheduled for Wednesday. He has agreed to plead guilty to murder, conspiracy and other charges and to testify against his co-defendants in exchange for a maximum sentence of 24 years in prison.

One of his lawyers, Geoffrey Nathan, said while Morlock might be ‘‘physically responsible’’ for his crimes, including actions depicted in the photograph, ‘‘the people who are morally responsible are the American leaders who have us in the wrong war at the wrong time.’’

In addition to the five soldiers charged in the deaths, seven soldiers in the platoon were charged with lesser crimes, including assaulting the witness in the drug investigation, drug use, firing on unarmed farmers and stabbing a corpse.

It is refreshing to find that there are still people in the world, whose views are not tinted by the biased media prevalent in the western world.
I was heartened by two letters that appeared in the Scotsman. The letters are reproduced here.

It is unfortunate that three of your contributors (letters, 26 April), supporters of Israeli policies, are unable to tolerate the views of Israelis/Jews with whom they do not agree.
Israel claims to be the only democracy in the Middle East – such democracy is not served by this lack of tolerance and has led to the continual state of military readiness Israel finds itself in.
The assumption that only it has rights and only it is a victim led to Israeli refusal to allow Armenians to erect a monument in memory of its own Holocaust victims (about 1.5 million people) near a Jewish monument.

It should not be forgotten that Israel was a nation born of terror, and in terrorism. No-one would deny Israelis a homeland, but they should examine the past from more than one perspective. British soldiers were murdered by the Hagannah and Irgun, British office workers were blown up in the King David Hotel; Israel continually takes land from its neighbours, bombs civilians indiscriminately from sophisticated air platforms and assassinates political opponents.

When Israel invaded Lebanon, 20,000 Lebanese were killed. Israel has ignored 63 United Nations resolutions, but any breach by Arabs is condemned. Israel will only be at peace when it acknowledges the aspiration to peace and happiness that others hold.

have often seen letters written by Joy Wolfe of Cheadle, Cheshire, in Scottish publications. It is a pity that she, Mr Grossman and Ms Selwyn have not acquainted themselves with the facts. For example, Ms Wolfe appears to believe that Israel was responsible for the invention of computers as well as mobile phones and various drugs.

I am a retired journalist, born in Edinburgh of Jewish parents. From the 1960s, I lived in London and travelled extensively in Israel and the Arab countries, carrying out, for four years, the research for my book, Prophets in Babylon: Jews in the Arab world (Faber & Faber). I visited Israel to write something about the 1967 war. I was appalled by the way the Palestinians were being treated by Jews who had taken over their country and were talking about "cleansing the land" as the Palestinians were forced out at gunpoint.

Ms Selwyn has written that "Gaza is not occupied by Israel but by Hamas, supposedly elected". Hamas was democratically elected and there was a cease-fire, which was ignored by Israel although not by Hamas.

Various human rights organisations have reported details of Israel's invasion and siege of Gaza from December to January, 2008-9, which followed an 18-month siege and blockade during which an occupied population experienced starvation, deprivation and trauma on a horrendous scale.

The invasion resulted in the deaths of 1,400 Palestinian civilians. More than 5,400 Palestinians received horrific wounds, burns and amputations. Ten Israeli soldiers were killed (four by their own fire) as were two Israeli civilians.

Nato strike kills 33 civilians in Afghanistan

BBC reports that at least 33 civilians were killed in a Nato air strike that included women and children in southern Afghanistan on Sunday.
Nato said it hit a suspected insurgent convoy, but ground forces later found "a number of individuals killed and wounded", including women and children.
The attack, in Uruzgan province, was not part of a major Nato-led offensive in neighbouring Helmand province.
Civilian deaths in air strikes have caused widespread resentment in Afghanistan, and embarrassment to Nato.

Last year, Gen Stanley McChrystal, the Nato and US commander in Afghanistan, introduced much tougher rules of engagement in a bid to minimise such casualties.
The BBC's Chris Morris in Kabul says three vehicles on a road were hit by the strike on Sunday morning. But Sultan Ali, the governor of Uruzgan province, told the BBC all of the dead were civilians.
McCrystal has apologised to President Hamid Karzai and pledged a full investigation into the latest deaths" I have made it clear to our forces that we are here to protect the Afghan people, and inadvertently killing or injuring civilians undermines their trust and confidence in our mission.

These tougher rules of engagement don’t seem to make any difference to fatalities.
Is this just paper exercise? Surely if these rules were being applied then there would be a difference. They keep saying we are here to protect the Afghan people. However they keep making these mistakes again and again and they will keep repeating it unless someone is held accountable. Of course that is not going to happen because Afghan lives are cheap. You can simply write it off as collateral damage and issue an apology. An apology is just meaningless to the people whose loved one have perished because someone else’s mistake. Foreign force are there to protect the Afghan people. Is is how one protects people?

These lives are cheap because they happen to be muslims..
Here is what has happened so far:

July 2008: Raid in Nangarhar kills up to 47 civilians at wedding party

Whenever people in Afghanistan read of civilians being killed by foreign military forces, there is going to anger right across the political and social spectrum.

Impregnable cage for Gaza ?

Just when you thought thing cannot get any worse, apparent confirmation that the Egyption government is building an underground steel barrier that is 18 metres deep designed to cut off one of the few lifelines sustaining the Gaza Ghetto, the tunnel economy. The BBC reports that the huge underground wall will be 10-11km (6-7 miles) long, will extend 18 metres below the surface and will take 18 months to complete. The project has been shrouded in secrecy with no official confirmation from the Egyptian governmentI It is understood that the design is commissioned by US army engineers, at the request of Israel, Ann Wright surmises.
The 'impenetrable' barrier is made of super-strength steel. It is bomb proof and cannot be cut. It will unlikely to succeed in halting all smuggling as it will force Palestinians to dig deeper.
If this report is accurate, it would be a new low in the levels of inhumanity, absurdity and wretchedness to which the Israeli regime, with active Egyptian and US complicity, are subjecting the beleaguered Palestinians of Gaza.
Egypt is a Muslim state but is indifferent to the suffering of their fellow brothers in the occupied territories. How does the President of Egypt Hosni Mubarak sleep at night? It seems as the compassion has been sucked right out of his soul.
Only a just political resolution will put an end to the tunnels.
This Egyptian underground steel wall not be able to contain the survival spirit of the people of Gaza.

So president barrack Obama has been awarded Nobel Peace prize .Lets have a look at the facts. He would have barely been in office for two weeks when the nomination closed so what could he have possibly achieved in two weeks?
The only logical conclusion one can draw from this is that this must be an award in anticipation, in the hope that he will achieve peace
Peace is achieved when you actually stop people from killing each other. Has he done that? I don’t think so.
So why the award?

Besides he is singing from the same hymn book as his predecessor Mr Bush, apart from making great oratory wonders. The rhetoric has changed a little but there is no change in policy. He is sending extra 30,000 troops to fight.

Does he thinks going to war brings peace?

No it does not, it's the opposite.War and paeace cannot co-exist.

Its eight years since the best equipped force went into Afghanistan and they are still fighting the Taliban. Taliban are far from defeated, they are stronger than before and they cannot be defeated. Anyone can see that.

Some time ago we were hit with headscarf bandwagon now it is the turn of Burkha.

Douglas Murray being the Director of Social Cohesion is not doing social cohesion any favors by such statements. He is simply jumping on the media bandwagon. There are far more things worthy of banning than Burkha.

Looking at his statement it is clear he has little understanding of Muslims.

Far from it, you are telling Muslim women what they can and cannot wear. You are depriving them of their right to dress themselves the way they see fit. Those who choose to wear it are not forced to wear but it a choice they themselves make. No one forces a Muslim to fast in the Month of Ramadan, he simply chooses to do so because it prescribed by God. Other Muslims choose to ignore It., that is their choice. Quran says “There is no compulsion in religion”. Burkha is not insult to women it is you who are insulting them by telling them that they cannot wear it.

Israeli citizen denied social benefits for visiting Palestinian husband

For obvious reason we shall call this lady Mrs X.
Mrs X was born in Lod, a city in the Plain of Sharon, 20 km/12 miles southeast of Tel Aviv, Israel; where she lived all her life and is raising her four children. Her only sin, apparently, was in marrying a resident of the territories. That was enough for the National Insurance Institute to continually investigate her, withhold her social benefits and humiliate her. Mrs X, now in her eighth month of pregnancy, has two girls in kindergarten in Lod. She has worked in the city, owns an apartment and pays her bills on time.

She is also a client at the local Health Maintenance Organization and well-baby clinics in her neighbourhood. However, despite all these facts, the NII has determined that S. does not live in Lod, but rather in the territories with her husband, who is not allowed into Israel. The NII decided this was the case following her declaration that she had made a short trip to the territories. This means that all her social benefits can be taken away, including her child allowances and payment of her hospital bill when she gives birth, and health insurance for herslf and her children. The last NII investigation, which took 14 months, determined what the two others over the past six years have, that she does not live in Lod. The NII informed her in a letter that she had 45 days to appeal the decision before her benefits were halted. However, they were stopped immediately. Mrs X said clerks at her local NII branch refused to accept her appeal, shouting that she was a liar who had children only for the insurance benefits. Her second attempt to approach the NII also ended with her being turned away by shouting clerks rejecting a residency document she had submitted. A worker from the legal aid group Community Advocacy accompanied her to the NII with the appeal and a thick file of documents, which the NII rejected the same day. Sigalit Givon-Fadida, director of the Lod Community Advocacy branch, said dozens of their clients had been humiliated by NII clerks, which regularly "prevented people from being innocent until proven guilty." The National Insurance Institute responded that their investigation showed that Mrs X was not a Lod resident and was therefore not entitled to benefits and that she. could appeal to the Labor tribunal. They also denied that the NII clerks had behaved in the manner she described.

As a teenager I came to England and started school in country where everything was alien to me, fellow pupils asked me my name. On telling them they would give you look of bewilderment and would come out with comments like “What sort of a name is that?” Anything that is unfamiliar to you sounds odd. Now that I have lived here most of my life people still struggle to pronounce my name correctly. Some of the names I came across are a real mystery to me. Others English names like Smith, Barber, Mason, etc are easy give away as to why people acquired such name in history. Name tells you great deal about your
ancestral roots.
Some combinations of first and last name are really amusing. Here are a few examples:

Hungry plane

We hear of birds being sucked into the engine of aeroplanes but a Japan Airlines flight plane at Los Angeles airport has found something a little stronger to suck. It sucked a metal object believed to be a cargo container.

Here is a picture of container jammed in the engine.

The incident happened as JAL flight 62 was leaving one of the airport's gates. A cargo container was sucked and wedged into the engine.

All passengers on board had to be taken off from the plane. There were no injuries reported.
Investigation is underway as to how this bizarre incident happened.

One day I noticed my application had been approved. The Card was printed and despatched to somewhere in Pakistan. Allah knows where because my relatives in Pakistan did not receive it. I phoned again and was told chase up one of the two courier companies.
This is NADRA in Pakistan.

The charity commission can’t see that. There must be people in this organisation that are openly biased and take side of Israeli murderers. As far as these people are concerned Israeli cannot do any wrong and Muslim are always to blame for everything.

solicit for funds in advert to support a foreign army involved in a widely condemned military action, in which thousands of civilians were killed, maimed and orphaned but charity commission have nothing to say for that. The number of people who are jobless has topped 2 million for the first time in twelve years and more and more people are signing on for benefits.Big name companies as well as small companies are folding by the day, putting more and more people out of a job. As a result there are fewer jobs available.
There are some people out there who have no intention of working and they keep claiming benefit because they think this is the easy option. These people need to be hounded. Life is not a bed of roses for everyone on dole. Those working are fortunate to have jobs. Once someone loses a job it is very difficult to get back on the work ladder. Those over the age of fifty are going to struggle.
People working in DHSS have no qualms about stopping benefit to poor families. The purpose of their job has become to harass these individuals and all they need is an excuse. Any excuse will do.
Take the case of one man in Blackburn, Lancashire.He is on the wrong side of fifty and has two kids and a housewife dependant on him. He is unemployed and looking for work. A friend he has known for a long time dies. This friend lived in London. It is long trip to London and it is not cheap but he decides to go to his funeral. He tells DSS in Blackburn that he needs to travel to London. They say OK go and sign in London. He visits London office who tells him to come back the next day. He visits DHSS London office the next day and they inform him that he cannot sign on in London. He needs to sign on in Blackburn on his return.The funeral is over and he returns home and starts signing on in Blackburn. They tell him that they are stopping his benefit.He visits DHSS office numerous times but to no avail. It is now four weeks since he received any money and DHSS have told him to borrow from friends and family.To people who apply these draconian measure to harass poor people I pray that they lose their job somehow and their friend and families drop dead. Perhaps then they will realise that everyone dies sooner or later and we need to make allowances for that.

It has only one shower and 3 disgusting toilets.There are people sleeping next to the toilet. some have to take turns to sleep.The condition inside are barabaric.You would think in this day and age people would not treat others in in this degrading manner. Dawn on the 16th of March 2009, brought, Chief Justice Iftekhar Chowdhury and other sacked judges to their respect positions that had long been denied to them. This news sent a shock wave of happiness through the country. People took to the streets to celebrate this historic fact. As well as Political activist the long march had attracted people from all walks of life. Everyone had the same objective. This being the establishment of free and independent judicial system and restoration of sacked judges to their original positions. When leaders of lawyer movement decided to barricade themselves at the constitution Avenue, Muslim League( Nawaz,) Jamaat Islami and Tehrik-e-Insaf fully supported them. To achieve this success the legal community scarified everything. They were assaulted, dragged through streets, and suffered injuries but in the end their sacrifice bore fruit. Common sense has prevailed. The government has few more hurdles to climb. The first is to end Governor Rule in Punjab. The second is to revise their decision to deselect Sharif Brothers.Muslim league (Nawaz) has upheld d their principles and given the people of Pakistan a voice. The man in the street can make a difference when he has the determination to succeed.

Now a warrant has been issued for the arrest of another opposition leader, Imran Khan, the former Pakistan cricket captain.Many of his people have been arrested.

In the past the military, Pakistan's most powerful institution, has stepped in to seize power from failing governments. The current army chief, Gen Ashfaq Pervez Kayani, has said he will respect civilian rule. I think militay stepping in would be a better option for Pakistan.

The act of imposing section 144 in Islamabad is to sabotage the lawyer’s gathering to protest against the gob who betrayed promises to restore the judiciary at the position of November 2, 2007
By this imposition this section 144 the gov is to justify bloody violence against lawyers, jurists, civil society activists and people from political parties.
The intention is to o intimidate the lawyers so that they do not attend either the march or the sit in.
The Magistrate who imposed this section should bear in mind that every citizen has a right to ventilate his grievances either in public or in private and ask for redress. This right cannot be curtailed so long as it is exercised in a lawful manner
Witchunt of political activists and lawyers has started. Many political workers and lawyers have been arrested. The province including the capital city Lahore, has decided to deploy Rangers in the big cities/towns. People’s houses are being raided for arrests.The government is afraid of the damage this march can do to their credibility.This Government is starting on a slippery slope when it starts arresting people on the pretext that they think these people may break the law. It is the right of people to demonstrating against unjust practices. Democracy is all about fair play. We say we are a democratic nation but when it comes to actual practice we use any means legal or illegal. Whoever is in government thinks the law is there to keep him in power and uses it to do just that.
Police have flexed their muscle and arrested human rights activist, Tahira Abdullah but he was released after being kept into custody for three hours. This is terror tactic designed to instil fear in peoples mind. The question that everyone is asking where is this going to lead.
The Asian Human Rights Commission has urged on the federal government to undo the orders of the district magistrate of the imposition of section 144 of CrPC and allow the citizens to have their protest in a peaceful manner

Mr Zardari seems to be on course for taking revenge from Iftikhar Chaudhry because he thinks he was complicit in his imprisonment for murder and corruption charges in the 1990s and the early part of this decade.Under his administration, Pakistan is descending deeper into crisis.

What has PPP done that is good in Pakistan Answer: a big fat nothing.
Since PPP came to power, we have more power cuts, food prices have rocketed. fuel subsidies have gone so man in street suffers traders suffers. Everyone suffers apart from the government. This is from a Party that derives its name from the word “People”. That is so disgusting. I think PPP should rename itself to Zardari Party.
When people of Pakistan got rid of dictator Musharraf, things were looking hopeful. The Murree Declaration set two parties to work together to govern Pakistan.
Thing did not start well when Zardari started dragging his heels over the restoration of judiciary. Even then people thought given time he will do the honourable thing.
But of course he had no intention of restoring all the senior judges. This was one topic that was common bond between the two parties. They were sworn enemies of each other. Since coming to power, PPP has displayed a hate mentality against the PML (N). A party in government has to behave with dignity. It can not carry out personal vendetta against opposition parties. It is exactly what I t has done since it came to power.
It has to think and pursue policies that are beneficial for the country as a whole.
PPP or rather Zardari has demonstrated that he is a man who can not be trusted. He should have honoured the pledge that his able wife made with good intentions. He has gone back on his promises and tarnished name of BeNazeer. Not only did he fail his wife he then started personal vendetta against opposition parties. This led him into doctoring the judges to disqualify Sharif bothers. Even that was not enough he had to impose governor rule in Punjab as well. That is taking the Mickey. There are parts of the country that resemble war zone. No he did not impose governor rule there. But he had to impose it in Punjab. Why man.? Has he taken leave of his senses? He keeps prodding coalition partners with spears and then come out with statement that all parties need to work together. Is that his way of working togather?

We are hearing in some circle that certain leaders are trying to mediate between the two parties. Would you trust a man who does not deliver on his promise, given several chances? How can anyone believe a word coming out this man's mouth? He is deceitful and will remain deceitful. I can’t see how he can redeem himself from this situation.
He has done damage that can not possibly be repaired.
This man should be in charge of organising a piss up in a brewery. He might actually succeed.

There are so many able people in Pakistan, yet people of Pakistan or PPP have to elect this man as leader. The Pakistani nation and its leaders need to do some serious soul searching and get rid of this American poodle before any more damaged is done to the country.

Have you ever gone into a mosque and you are waiting for prayer to start . You gaze upon clothes of person next to you. He is wearing clothes that were probably last washed a month ago.
You think prostating to the Almighty Creator you would want to wear reasonably clean set of clober. The clothes are Pak only when they are clean. Prayer brings peace and calm to our heart. Having a clean and Paak set of clothes bring you even more closer to the Almighty.

I urge brothers to keep everything around us clean, our clothes. our houses our streets our towns and cities. All of these acts will earn us Sawab from Allah and his people.

Pakistan Supreme Court verdict to declare Nawaz and Shahbaz Sharif ineligible to contest elections or holding public offices has further devalued the respect for the superior judiciary of the country. The man in the street is able to detect the forces behind this decision. Anyone can see this has Asif Zardari’s hand in it. Pakistan People Party selected him as their leader surpassing all the others because he was husband of BeNazir Bhutto’s husband. Once known as Mr 10 per cent for taking kickback he is now President of Pakistan.
Pakistan is going through a critical period and further destabilisation of Punjab can only add to the country’s woes. In Pakistan political is a dirty game and political parties get electively victimised .Would you expect Mr 10 percent to play fair? No
It is a sad day for Pakistan. People of Pakistan need to wake up and start electing people with moral and principles. I know it is hard but these people do exist albeit not so many.

update aid convoy arrests

In my previous post about aid convoy arrest, I mentioned about nine arrest by Lancashire Police.Then six people were released some days later without charge and three detained. I said in post that I thought the remaining three will be released without any charge.
Well they they have been released as well. Nine innocent men have been prevented from joining the aid convoy by Police. Three have been in cutody for almost a week.
The follow up action by the police, which has apparently included the strip-searching of an Imam and his wife in their own home in Blackburn will do wonders for community relations.
So what was the point of this futile exercise?

The police want to intimidate the muslim community and give the aid convoy a bad name. To some extent they have succeeded. The donations dropped dramatically since the high profile Police action.
The arrests were clearly deliberately timed for the eve of the departure of the convoy. Photographs of the high-profile snatch on the M65 were immediately fed to the press to maximise the newsworthiness of the smear that was being perpetrated on the convoy.
Innocent people have suffered mentally as well as financially as a result.

The tax payer does not pay taxes so that the Police start harrassing innocent folks in their daily life and start smear campaigne against charitable organisations.

Trader threatened with bailiffs over 1p debt

A SHOPKEEPER was threatened with bailiffs for a business rates debt of a penny.
The notice, sent on a council-headed letter from the authority’s revenue service recovery section, called for “immediate payment”.
It said: [If you do not pay] “Your case will be sent to the bailiffs for immediate collection. “If this proves necessary additional and significant costs will be added to your account.”
But when Usman Patel tried to settle the debt with a one pence piece, he was told his payment could not be accepted because minimum amount they could take was a £1.
How stupid is that? What a waste of taxpayer’s money.
Mr Patel, boss of the Blackburn News Centre in the Mall Shopping Centre for the past six years, was very upset especially when in the past he had never missed a payment.
Obviously the system is automated but someone must have seen the letter and realised the farce.
Blackburn with Darwen Council has now agreed to cancel the bill after admitting the letter was sent out by mistake following a computer error.
Denise Park, the council's strategic director of resources, said: "This is an automated system and this should not have happened, for which we apologise.

Gaza Aid convoy harassed

A CONVOY of aid vehicles being driven from East Lancashire to war-torn Gaza is back on the road after being halted by terror police. Nine men were arrested by officers on the M65 on Friday 13th February 2009 in what the police describe as an anti-terror operation.
The vehicles, carrying medicines, clothing and blankets, organised by the Lancashire Council of Mosques, were set to join a 100 vehicle convoy on its way to Gaza.
Six of these men have been released without charge.
Three of these men who were only going as far as London were unknown to the organisers. They were still being questioned by police and I think in time we will see them released as well.
Coun Salim Mulla said “The past two or three days have been a humiliating experience for those involved but they were determined not to be put off and are still part of the trip.”
Chris Chilvers, the North West organiser of the Viva Palestina aid convoy said:
"They are very angry about their treatment at the hands of the police and concerned that, despite being released without charge, the police are still refusing to return donations from the vans, personal belongings and mobile phones. The police have offered no satisfactory reason for these violations. The police behaviour has been a disgrace.
If the police knew something about these three then why didn’t the arrest them before there were with convoy. This smells of scare tactics and an attempt to blemish aid effort for Gaza.
The government is not only indifferent to the suffering of these people but it wants to stop others from helping them. It wants to tarnish the anything that has connotation of Islam.
It wants to restrict who get aid and who does not.
Police Chief Superintendent Neil Smith said the police were trying to be sensitive to the local communities.
I think the police have demonstrated nothing but insensitivity.
